Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

You might hear your hygienist recommend a deep cleaning or SRP. The procedure includes numbing and cleaning the pockets of pus created by bacteria underneath the gum line. The health of your gums is just as important as your teeth. Periodontal disease (or gum disease) is a common condition with varying degrees of severity from bleeding, swollen gums, and bad breath to bone recession and heart disease. This is probably the most important and understated dental procedure to maintain long-term oral health.

Deep Cleaning or SRP

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing) in Kahului
When gum disease develops, a regular dental cleaning isn’t always enough. At Kahului Dental, we provide deep cleanings—also called Scaling & Root Planing (SRP)—to stop infection, protect your gums, and preserve your natural teeth.
🦷 What Is Scaling & Root Planing?
Scaling & Root Planing is a non-surgical procedure that treats gum disease (periodontitis) by cleaning beneath the gumline where harmful bacteria and tartar build up.
Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gums.
Root planing smooths the roots of the teeth, helping gums heal and reattach securely.
⚠️ When Do You Need a Deep Cleaning?
Your dentist may recommend SRP if you have:
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
Persistent bad breath
Receding gums or “longer-looking” teeth
Pockets (spaces) forming between teeth and gums
Moderate to severe tartar buildup below the gums
👩‍⚕️ What to Expect During Treatment
Local anesthesia is often used for comfort.
The procedure may be done in one or two visits, depending on how many areas need treatment.
After treatment, we may recommend medicated rinses or antibiotics to aid healing.
🌿 Benefits of Deep Cleaning
Stops the progression of gum disease
Reduces gum inflammation and bleeding
Prevents bone loss around teeth
Improves overall oral health and freshens breath
📅 Aftercare & Follow-Up
Healing takes time. You may notice some tenderness for a few days, but discomfort is usually minimal. Most patients return for periodontal maintenance cleanings every 3–4 months to keep gum disease under control.
